A recent googleblog posting commented that 50% to 60% of sign-ups for new applications or services are abandoned in large part because people don’t want the hassle of having another login and password to remember. My first reaction was — wow, those are huge numbers. But then when I think of my own behavior I realize I’m probably close to that myself. How many websites or services do you not use or stop using because of username and password hassles? My guess is it’s a lot.
The issue is in the minds of Cocoon engineers as well. In fact, we are building an identity management tool into Cocoon to allow you to create different names, user IDs, passwords and email addresses for every website you go to if you want — and never have to remember any of them. Cocoon’s Profile Manager keeps track of them all for you, secure and encrypted, so you (and I) no longer need to keep a vulnerable list of logins and passwords “hidden” somewhere.
